The eThekwini Municipality has approved an R1 billion strategy to procure 300 midi-buses as part of its efforts to improve public transportation services
On December 11, Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda stated that council made a critical decision by approving the strategy of procuring 300 midi-buses and establishing a manufacturing plant in Durban.
He described this as a significant step forward in improving public transportation and stimulating economic growth in the city.
“Not only will this R1.6 billion investment over four years modernize public transportation, but it will also revitalize the local manufacturing sector, promoting job creation and supporting enterprise development in the City.”
“The anticipated socioeconomic benefits of this ground-breaking initiative include the creation of 160 permanent jobs and 363 temporary jobs during the construction phase.”
Opposition parties, however, have expressed concern about the situation.
“As ActionSA, we are deeply concerned that the municipality wants to spend R1.6 billion to procure 300 midi buses,” said Alan Beesley of ActionSA.
“With service delivery at an all-time low and infrastructure collapsing, these funds could be better spent, especially on the water and sanitation crisis.”
“In addition, with the secrecy around the approved bidder one has to question who the bidder is and possible links to the ANC led municipality,” said the member of the ActionSA council.
The DA expressed reservations about the project during the council meeting where the decision was made.
