As pressure mounts on TikTok-famous Matthew Lani, with the institutions he purportedly associates with distancing themselves, the alleged bogus doctor has finally spoken out.
Lani faced scrutiny when his claimed medical degree was questioned on social media earlier this week. The University of the Witwatersrand, the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), the Department of Health (his supposed employer), and other entities have all disassociated from him.
In a brief video shared on social media, Lani criticized the media and others for not making direct contact with him. However, when News24 attempted to reach out to him, his phone went directly to voicemail.
“They ran with what Twitter was saying, and what frustrates me in reading this is that these people are not using my real names,” he said. “I literally had to email HPCSA and tell them that this is my TikTok handle, and this is my legal name, and this is my ID number, and this is everything.
“What annoys me is that people are going to Wits, they are going to Department of Health, they going to these people with names that are not mine.”
Lani’s account has since been banned.
